ALMA Overview

Arnaud Legoux Moving Average (ALMA) is a trend-following overlay indicator that smooths price data to identify the underlying trend direction — filtering out short-term noise to reveal whether price is generally moving up or down.

  1. Apply Gaussian-weighted average: Uses a Gaussian (bell curve) distribution to weight prices, with offset and sigma parameters controlling where the peak weight falls and how spread out the weights are
  2. Plot on Chart: ALMA line overlays directly on the price chart
  3. Compare to Price: When price is above ALMA, trend is bullish; below = bearish
  4. Detect Crosses: Price crossing above/below ALMA signals potential trend changes

Key Characteristics:

  • Trend Filter = ALMA smooths price to show direction, removing noise
  • Dynamic Support/Resistance = ALMA line acts as a moving support (uptrend) or resistance (downtrend) level
  • Uses a Gaussian (bell curve) distribution to weight prices
  • Period Sensitivity = Shorter periods react faster but produce more whipsaws; longer periods are smoother but lag more

ALMA Behavior:

  • ALMA line smooths price action to show the dominant trend
  • When price crosses above ALMA, momentum shifts bullish
  • When price crosses below ALMA, momentum shifts bearish
  • The slope of ALMA indicates trend strength — steeper = stronger
  • ALMA acts as dynamic support in uptrends and resistance in downtrends

These are the signal names you select when configuring ALMA in the algorithm builder or via the MCP agent:

SignalTriggers WhenTypical Use
price_above_almaPrice is above the ALMA lineBullish — price trending above ALMA
price_below_almaPrice is below the ALMA lineBearish — price trending below ALMA

Display: Overlay (on price chart)

Category: Trend

Threshold range: Price-based (compared to actual price values)

What Arnaud Legoux Moving Average Does Well:

  • Trend Identification: ALMA clearly shows whether price is in an uptrend or downtrend
  • Dynamic Support/Resistance: Acts as a moving level that price tends to respect
  • Noise Filtering: Smooths out random price fluctuations to reveal the true trend
  • Universal Application: Works across all assets and timeframes with period adjustments
