EMA Overview

Exponential Moving Average (EMA) is a trend-following overlay indicator that smooths price data to identify the underlying trend direction — filtering out short-term noise to reveal whether price is generally moving up or down.

  1. Apply Exponential weighting: Applies exponentially decreasing weights to older bars, making it more responsive to recent price changes than SMA
  2. Plot on Chart: EMA line overlays directly on the price chart
  3. Compare to Price: When price is above EMA, trend is bullish; below = bearish
  4. Detect Crosses: Price crossing above/below EMA signals potential trend changes

Key Characteristics:

  • Trend Filter = EMA smooths price to show direction, removing noise
  • Dynamic Support/Resistance = EMA line acts as a moving support (uptrend) or resistance (downtrend) level
  • Applies exponentially decreasing weights to older bars
  • Period Sensitivity = Shorter periods react faster but produce more whipsaws; longer periods are smoother but lag more

EMA Behavior:

  • EMA line smooths price action to show the dominant trend
  • When price crosses above EMA, momentum shifts bullish
  • When price crosses below EMA, momentum shifts bearish
  • The slope of EMA indicates trend strength — steeper = stronger
  • EMA acts as dynamic support in uptrends and resistance in downtrends

These are the signal names you select when configuring EMA in the algorithm builder or via the MCP agent:

SignalTriggers WhenTypical Use
price_above_emaPrice is above the EMA lineBullish — price trending above EMA
price_below_emaPrice is below the EMA lineBearish — price trending below EMA

What Exponential Moving Average Does Well:

  • Trend Identification: EMA clearly shows whether price is in an uptrend or downtrend
  • Dynamic Support/Resistance: Acts as a moving level that price tends to respect
  • Noise Filtering: Smooths out random price fluctuations to reveal the true trend
  • Universal Application: Works across all assets and timeframes with period adjustments
