VWEMA Overview

Volume-Weighted Exponential Moving Average (VWEMA) is a trend-following overlay indicator that smooths price data to identify the underlying trend direction — filtering out short-term noise to reveal whether price is generally moving up or down.

How Volume-Weighted Exponential Moving Average Works

Section titled “How Volume-Weighted Exponential Moving Average Works”
  1. Apply Volume-weighted EMA: Combines EMA smoothing with volume weighting — prices with higher volume get more influence in the exponential average
  2. Plot on Chart: VWEMA line overlays directly on the price chart
  3. Compare to Price: When price is above VWEMA, trend is bullish; below = bearish
  4. Detect Crosses: Price crossing above/below VWEMA signals potential trend changes

Key Characteristics:

  • Trend Filter = VWEMA smooths price to show direction, removing noise
  • Dynamic Support/Resistance = VWEMA line acts as a moving support (uptrend) or resistance (downtrend) level
  • Combines EMA smoothing with volume weighting — prices with higher volume get more influence in the exponential average
  • Period Sensitivity = Shorter periods react faster but produce more whipsaws; longer periods are smoother but lag more

VWEMA Behavior:

  • VWEMA line smooths price action to show the dominant trend
  • When price crosses above VWEMA, momentum shifts bullish
  • When price crosses below VWEMA, momentum shifts bearish
  • The slope of VWEMA indicates trend strength — steeper = stronger
  • VWEMA acts as dynamic support in uptrends and resistance in downtrends

These are the signal names you select when configuring VWEMA in the algorithm builder or via the MCP agent:

SignalTriggers WhenTypical Use
price_above_vwemaPrice is above the VWEMA lineBullish — price trending above VWEMA
price_below_vwemaPrice is below the VWEMA lineBearish — price trending below VWEMA

What Volume-Weighted Exponential Moving Average Does Well:

  • Trend Identification: VWEMA clearly shows whether price is in an uptrend or downtrend
  • Dynamic Support/Resistance: Acts as a moving level that price tends to respect
  • Noise Filtering: Smooths out random price fluctuations to reveal the true trend
  • Universal Application: Works across all assets and timeframes with period adjustments
